Dryer Error Codes — What Is Your Dryer Telling You?
Many newer dryers show an error code when air can’t flow out through the vent. In most cases, that code means the dryer vent needs cleaning, not that the dryer is broken. This page lists the vent and airflow codes for LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, GE, and Electrolux dryers.
Exact codes vary by model. Your dryer’s manual and manufacturer are always the final source.

Vent and Airflow Error Codes by Brand
| Brand | Code | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| LG | d75, d80, d90, d95 | Exhaust duct is about 75%, 80%, 90%, or 95% restricted. (On some gas models, d80 can mean no gas supply.) |
| LG | Flow Sense: 2 or 4 bars | Exhaust system is severely restricted. |
| Samsung | Clg / Cg | Vent is clogged (shown after a Vent Blockage test). |
| Samsung | C80 / C8, C90 / C9 | Vent is about 80% or over 90% clogged. |
| Samsung | HC, hE, HC4 | Dryer is getting too hot. Samsung says the usual cause is a clogged lint screen or vent. |
| Samsung | tS, t5, tC, tO, tE | Temperature or sensor error. Samsung says the usual cause is a clogged lint screen or vent. |
| Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana | AF or F4 E3 | Restricted airflow. The lint screen or vent is clogged, or the vent is crushed, kinked, or has too many turns. |
| GE | Check Vent | Low airflow out of the dryer. GE says the vent is blocked. |
| Electrolux | EF1 | Ventilation blockage. |
Frigidaire: Frigidaire is an Electrolux brand. Check your owner’s manual for your model’s codes.
Kenmore: Kenmore dryers have been built by several manufacturers, so codes depend on the model. Check your owner’s manual.
What to Do When You See a Vent Code
- Clean the lint screen.
- Check the duct behind the dryer for kinks or crushing.
- Check the outside vent hood. The flap should open freely when the dryer runs.
- If the code comes back, the blockage is farther inside the vent: in the wall, the attic, or at the roof jack. That’s where you need a full vent cleaning.
Don’t Buy a New Dryer Because of a Vent Code
A vent code is the dryer telling you the vent is restricted. A new dryer hooked to the same clogged vent will show the same code, dry just as slowly, and run just as hot. Always have the vent checked and cleaned before installing a new dryer.
Not All Dryer Vent Cleaning Is the Same
The short duct behind your dryer is only the start. Most of the vent runs inside walls, through the attic, out the side of the house, or up to the roof. If the roof jack is clogged, the vent is still clogged. Before you hire anyone, ask how they will clean the entire vent, including the roof jack. I clean the whole run and confirm airflow at the exit. Learn more about my dryer vent cleaning.

Codes That Are Not Vent Problems
Some codes point to the door, power supply, or electronics. Vent cleaning won’t fix these. Check your manual, or call an appliance repair service or electrician.
- Door: LG dE; Samsung dC, dE, dF; Electrolux E42.
- Power or voltage: LG PS, nP; Samsung 9C1, 9E; Whirlpool, Maytag, and Amana L2; Electrolux H2/B2.
- Power failure: Whirlpool, Maytag, and Amana PF.
- Service needed: Whirlpool, Maytag, and Amana alternating F# E# codes.

Dryer Error Code FAQs
Does a vent error code mean my dryer is broken?
Usually not. Vent and airflow codes mean air can’t get out of the dryer fast enough. Cleaning the vent fixes the cause.
I cleaned the lint screen. Why does the code keep coming back?
The blockage is farther down the vent, inside the wall, attic, or roof jack. The whole vent needs to be cleaned.
What does LG d80, d90, or d95 mean?
LG says the exhaust duct is about 80%, 90%, or 95% restricted.
What does AF mean on a Whirlpool, Maytag, or Amana dryer?
Restricted airflow. The lint screen or vent is clogged, or the vent is crushed, kinked, or has too many turns.
What does “Check Vent” mean on a GE dryer?
The dryer has detected low airflow, which GE says means the vent is blocked. GE recommends cleaning the vent as soon as possible.
